As the sun dipped below the horizon on a crisp autumn evening, friends gathered outside Raxakoul Coffee and Cheese shop, their laughter mingling with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Among them was Len Kamp, a beloved figure whose warmth and creativity touched the lives of many in Berkeley. On October 26, 2023, at the age of 88, Len passed away, leaving behind a legacy as a teacher, tree surgeon, carpenter, and artist.

A Life of Diverse Passions

Born on August 30, 1938, in Argos, Indiana, Len Kamp was the son of Gladys and Claude Kamp. His journey began in a small Midwestern town, but it was in California where he truly flourished. After meeting his wife, Virginia (Ginny) Marceau, in San Diego, they married in 1965 and moved to Berkeley. Here, Len pursued a degree in landscape architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating with honors in 1969.

While Len enjoyed the design aspects of landscape architecture, he found his true passion among the trees. In 1972, he transitioned to become an arborist tree surgeon, managing Entriken Tree Service for 11 years. During this time, he not only honed his skills but also shared his knowledge, teaching many the art of tree care. His dedication to the environment was evident in every tree he nurtured.

In 1983, Len expanded his talents into carpentry, inspired by a personal project to add an upstairs bedroom and bath to his home. He took on the challenge himself, with the help of another carpenter, and soon became a finished carpenter, working with Covalt Construction on historic homes across San Francisco and the Bay Area. One notable project involved the renovation of a house in Danville, where they uncovered newspaper articles about Abraham Lincoln, a reminder of the rich history embedded within the walls of the homes he worked on.

Artistry and Community Engagement

Len's creativity extended beyond carpentry; he was also an accomplished artist. Throughout his life, he traveled with Ginny, capturing moments through sketchbook drawings. His passion for art culminated in an exhibition at the Berkeley City Club in 2023, where he encouraged others to embrace their artistic sides. “Even though we live in a fast-paced world, I encourage everyone to take the time to sketch,” he once said. “Anyone can draw. It isn’t necessary to be trained. Just get a pen and paper and go for it.”

This ethos resonated deeply within the community. Len's sketches served not only as a personal diary but also as a bridge connecting him to others. He believed that art could help preserve memories, a sentiment that struck a chord with many who sought to capture fleeting moments in their own lives. His belief in the power of creativity inspired countless individuals to pick up a pencil and explore their artistic potential.

Len was also known for his engaging presence in the neighborhood. Each evening, he could be found sitting with friends at Raxakoul Coffee and Cheese, sharing stories and welcoming newcomers to join their discussions. His friendly demeanor and willingness to connect with others made him a cherished member of the Berkeley community, particularly among families and children.

Creating Joy Through Topiary

Among the many ways Len touched lives, his whimsical topiary creations stood out. In front of his North Berkeley home, he crafted a topiary elephant and giraffe that delighted children and adults alike. These living sculptures became a symbol of joy and creativity in the neighborhood, drawing smiles from passersby and sparking the imaginations of young minds.

Len's commitment to fostering community spirit extended to his involvement in a weekly softball group held at Codornices Park. Every Friday night, from daylight savings until fall, families gathered to play. Len believed in the importance of participation, ensuring that parents joined in the fun rather than simply dropping off their children. This approach created an inclusive atmosphere where families could bond over shared experiences, reinforcing the values of commitment and togetherness.

A Legacy of Love and Family

Len Kamp’s legacy is not only defined by his professional accomplishments but also by the love he shared with his family. He is survived by his wife, Ginny; daughter, Kelly Trammel; sons, Jon and James Kamp; grandson, Dustin Dell; granddaughters, Dezirae Parker, Camille Dell, Katie Kamp, and Owen Kamp; and seven great-grandchildren. Their lives are a testament to the strong family values Len cherished, and his memory will undoubtedly live on through them.

As a devoted husband and father, Len instilled in his family the importance of creativity, connection, and community. His approach to life was characterized by a commitment to nurturing relationships, whether with his family or the wider community. He often emphasized the significance of being present, a lesson that resonates deeply in today’s fast-paced world.

Len’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his spirit continues to inspire. Friends and family alike remember him not only for his artistic talents and professional skills but also for his unwavering kindness and generosity. His ability to connect with others, especially children, made a lasting impact that will not fade with time.

Honoring His Memory

In the wake of Len’s passing, the community has begun to reflect on the profound influence he had on their lives. Tributes have poured in from neighbors and friends, sharing stories of how Len touched their hearts through his art, his laughter, and his unwavering spirit. The topiary animals he created will continue to stand as a reminder of his playful nature and his desire to bring joy to others.

As we remember Len Kamp, it is essential to celebrate the values he embodied: love, creativity, and community engagement. His life serves as a reminder of the importance of nurturing relationships and the impact one individual can have on the lives of many. In a world that often feels disconnected, Len's legacy encourages us to come together, to share our stories, and to embrace the beauty of creativity.

In the coming weeks, the community plans to hold a memorial gathering to honor Len’s life and contributions. This event will provide an opportunity for friends and family to share their memories and celebrate the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to enriching the lives of others. As we reflect on his journey, we are reminded of the importance of cherishing those we love and the enduring power of community.
